2018 CAROLINA GLOBAL FOOD PROGRAM “2018 SUMMER SCHOLARS”

The Carolina Global Food Program, an initiative within the Global Research Institute, is instituting its third annual competitive scholarship program in the summer of 2018.

In the program a select number of Carolina Global Food Program “Summer Scholars” will be awarded up to $5,000 each to support food related summer research projects. Each awardee will explore a food topic relating to food or agriculture, broadly conceived. The topic may have an academic or policy focus or an emphasis on public service. As such, projects can be archivally based or involve field work or engagement experiences. Preference will be given to projects that are responsive to the goals of the university theme “Food for All” and the long-term advancement of food studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The awardees must be rising junior or senior undergraduate students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

For more information and application requirements, please see the 2018 Scholarship Press Release or the Carolina Global Food Program website.

Application Deadline:  March 4, 2018

NC GROWING TOGETHER LOCAL FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN APPRENTICE-SUMMER 2018

NC Growing Together (NCGT) is proud to announce the Summer 2018 Local Food Supply Chain Apprenticeship. Through an exciting 8-week program, apprentices will have the opportunity to work with local food hubs, businesses and organizations and gain hands-on training related to local food systems and value chains work.

Apprentices will dedicate 40 hours per week for an 8-week period with one of the nine mentoring organizations. The apprenticeship will be paid and some travel (outside of home to duty station) will be included. Each organization is looking for specific skills, but overall apprentices should have an interest in local food systems and agriculture and should have some experience in agriculture, business, marketing, or a related field.

NCGT aims to bring more locally-produced foods into mainstream retail and wholesale markets, strengthening the economics of small to mid-sized farm and fishing operations and their communities. One of the main activities is to work on the intermediary steps in the supply chain, including aggregation, processing, and distribution, to understand and remove barriers that may prevent local foods from entering large-scale markets. Apprentices will work to carry out this mission by working with their mentorship organizations.
